How to pitch us
We are always looking for freelance pitches. You can pitch us here.
Our budget currently allows us to pay $0.50 a word, though particular projects may have special rates. The majority of our donations go toward sustaining our ability to continue paying writers and to be able to do so consistently.
We are unable to respond to all pitches, but we will contact you as soon as possible if we want to move forward with your proposed piece. We monitor our pitches regularly, though responses may be slow: Our primary editor works full-time also handling operations and distributions, and the rest of our team is volunteer.
If you have questions after reading the below considerations and guidelines, please email contact@objectivejournalism.org (or include them directly in your pitch if they are not time-sensitive).
Some considerations when pitching:
- Please wait at least one week before following up. Again, as most of our editorial team does not work full-time, we may not be able to get back to you immediately and appreciate your patience.
- Please be very clear about why your pitch should have a home with us, rather than another media reporting/criticism site (e.g. Columbia Journalism Review, Nieman Lab) or news outlet. For consideration, our abridged mission statement: “The Objective is a nonprofit newsroom examining systems of power and inequity in journalism: how newsrooms treat their employees, how journalists interact with their community, and what new forms of journalism can look like.”
